The ghost of Rika, a childhood friend who perished in a car accident, haunts Yuta Okkotsu. The sweet girl he referred to as his darling no longer manifests in her spirit. Instead, because of a curse on her spirit, she appears as a hideous thing that defends him against his will.
The movie is made by MAPPA, same like the TV show, and is helmed by Sunghoo Park. In interviews, Park gave narrative hints for the film and disclosed that it has fresh material not found in Volume 0. The prequel series was originally intended to be covered in the first few episodes of the anime, but Park ultimately chose to start with the main series. Later, he and the staff came to the conclusion that the prequel would work better as a movie than a television series.
Hiroshi Seko, the screenwriter, acknowledged that extra unique scenes were required to assist the story fit the two-hour theatrical time slot. To clarify the connections between Gojo and Geto as well as Yuta and Rika, new information was added. The action scenes, according to Park and Seko, are still the main attraction, so they set out to make them even hotter than in the anime. Though not drastically different from the television show, Park attempted to give this movie a unique cinematic look.
